This is without a doubt the best robot vacuum cleaner we have reviewed at this price point. Not necessarily the best in terms of cleaning performance, but in regards to value for money, you can’t beat the iRobot Roomba 650.
This robot vacuum cleaner comes with all the features that make vacuuming with a robot so much easier. It automatically docks and recharges, as you would expects, but it also automatically adjusts itself to all flooring types such as hardwood, laminate, carpets, and tiles.
It features the wonderfully designed iRobot iAdapt navigation system that makes use of a full suite of sensors to help the robot navigate around your home, and detect changes in furniture placement, without interruption. This is what blew my mind. The iAdapt technology makes this robot vacuum cleaner so smart that it knows, through some acoustic sensor wizardry, how to find dirtier areas of the carpet and that it needs to do multiple passes and spend more time cleaning them!
The iRobot Roomba 650 will pick up all types of grime, including dust, pet hair, and larger items such as your kid’s messy biscuit crumbs. It can be conveniently scheduled to automatically begin its vacuuming routine up to 7 times weekly, and can also be activated to immediately begin vacuuming at the press of a button. Handy for those emergency situations that call for an immediate vacuum!
- Can be scheduled to run at set times through the week, or automatically activated at the push of a button.
- iRobot have been developing robot vacuum cleaners for many years, and are a trusted and known brand.
- The Roomba 650 works on all floor types including carpet and hardwood.
- The value for money in this product is insane. It is consistently reviewed as one of the best robot vacuum cleaners available, but doesn’t have the premium price tag to match.
- Although small, the Roomba 650 can be a little noisy
- As expected from a small robot, the debris bin is small
- Does not clean stairs. We will forgive it for this! Maybe in the year 2100 they will.
I cannot recommend the iRobot Roomba 650 enough. It is good enough to get the top review in our robot vacuum category, and also good enough for me to buy one for my brother to give him time to play with his newborn.
It has all the features you would expect from a robot vacuum cleaner, and you have peace of mind knowing it was made by a trusted brand with many years of research and development put behind all the patented technologies in this product.
Robotic vacuums can often be given a harsh review, but the iRobot Roomba 650 should be given serious consideration when choosing which robot vacuum cleaner to buy.

Are robot vacuum cleaners any good?
Five years ago, I would have been hesitant to recommend a robot vacuum cleaner to anyone. I found them frustrating, and the flood of low quality products flooding the market generally meant this type of vacuum cleaner was given a bit of a bad name (it’s worth noting that iRobot were one of the first companies to retail robot vacuum cleaners, and led the way in research and development of this type of vacuum cleaner. It was the success of iRobot vacuums that caused the influx of cheaper low performing models).
These days however, the technology in robot vacuum cleaners simply blows my mind. iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaners are a range of patented technology which ensures they give your home a really good clean. The iAdapt Responsive Navigation feature described below is the main benefit of buying a iRobot model. This ensures dirtier areas of your home get well cleaner, and are given multiple passes by the robot to ensure nothing is left behind.
One of our most frequent questions is are robot vacuum cleaners any good, and my response is always the same. If you have a typical household with a pet or two, a robot will work just fine in 95% of cases. If you have an extra messy household, due to either multiple pets, young children, or living on a farm or lifestyle section, you may find the need to have a standard vacuum cleaner to give your home that really good thorough cleaning.
Feature & Performance Analysis
Roomba Virtual Wall Technology
The virtual wall technology that comes standard in the iRobot 650. Put simply, this means that you can setup a virtual wall that your Roomba robot will not pass. This feature means you can keep the Roomba in only the rooms you want cleaner, and keep it out of the ones you don’t. I’ve found this feature alone essential in a long house such as the one I live in. I use my Roomba to clean my living areas, but don’t want it to go wandering off on its own into the kids rooms. Using the Virtual Wall Technology I can fence off certain areas of the house and not have it clean those predetermined zones.
iAdapt Responsive Navigation Technology
As mentioned earlier, when I referred to this technology as some kind of wizardry, it truly below my mind. And that doesn’t happen often! The sensors in this small robot vacuum cleaner makes more than 60 decisions per second about the best and most efficient way to clean your floor. This technology is also what gives your robot the knowledge that it needs to clean your floor with multiple passes to ensure the room is cleaned more thoroughly than other, cheaper, robot vacuum cleaners will be capable of.
This robot vacuum cleaner is just 3.6 inch tall, meaning it can fit under a lot of standard sized furniture and give your home the more thorough clean you will be wanting. Getting under chairs and couches means no dust or pet hair is left behind, which is a god send if you have any allergies or suffer from asthma as I do.
You can schedule your iRobot Roomba 650 to vacuum on a preset schedule up to seven times per week. No longer do you have to manually activate your robot vacuum cleaner, you can set and forget it from the day you purchase it (except of course, when you need to empty it or give it the occasional nudge if it does happen to get stuck somewhere). However, if you have a sudden need to vacuum immediately, just hit the CLEAN button the the Roomba will begin cleaning with no delay, then return to its dock to recharge when required.
Robot vacuum cleaners aren’t known for their performance in picking up pet hair. However with the multiple pass iAdapt technology I am comfortable recommending the iRobot Roomba 650 as one of the best robot vacuum cleaners for pet hair. Do however keep in mind that if you have multiple pets, or a pet that leaves hair EVERYWHERE, you may notice that you will have to empty the Roombas dust bin frequently as it is a small vacuum that simply can’t store as much grime as a full sized upright or canister vacuum cleaner could.
It goes without saying, your not going to get clean stairs using a robot vacuum cleaner. If you are choosing to use any robot as your main household vacuum cleaner, we suggest also investing in a cheap handheld vacuum cleaner to get the areas the robot can’t reach, such as stair, bench tops, & upholstery, The best handheld vacuum cleaner we have reviewed is the Black & Decker CHV1410L. It is under $100 and well worth considering as an additional to the iRobot Roomba 650 or any other robot vacuum cleaner that you may choose.
Other Buying Considerations
The Roomba 650 comes with a one year manufactures warranty on the robot, and a six month warranty on the battery. As with all warranties, if the product isn’t used as designed the warranty will not be honoured, and if the defects are caused by products or equipment not authorised by iRobot than the warranty will also not apply.
This model costs under $400 from most online retailers. Check the current price online to see if it falls within your price range. For a high quality robot vacuum cleaner from a brand as well known as iRobot, I consider this a great price. However for the average consumer wanting a vacuum cleaner without a preference for robotic vacuum cleaners, the price could be too high. If you are not 100% wanting to purchase a robotic vacuum cleaner, and want to save a bit of money, you may like to consider reading our upright or canister vacuum cleaner reviews.
Roomba 650 Positive Remarks
- Carpet or hardwood floors, it doesn’t matter. The Roomba can clean it all on a schedule without any input from me. It cleans my 750 sq.ft apartment.
- My son raved about his roomba when he got one, and twisted my arm to get one for myself. They have certainly advanced a lot in the last 5 years from inefficient headaches to great little home maids.
- Every now and then I have to give it a nudge, but overall am very happy with the automated cleaning.Giving a 30 second nudge is still easier than manually doing a 30 minute vacuum.
- I finally bought one! We run it when we are at work, and as a 4 person house with a cat, I’m over the moon with how clean our lounge and bedroom area looks when we get home from work. It’s also cute watching the cat’s reaction to it sometimes!
Roomba 650 Negative Remarks
- It does a really great job cleaning when it doesn’t get stuck on a rug or under our couch.
- I used to schedule it three to five times per week, but every now and then came home to it trapped with fabric or a charging cable.
iRobot Brand Review
As mentioned previously, the Roomba brand is well known in the robot vacuum cleaner industry. They were the pioneers of the robot vacuum cleaner category, and have invested large amounts of money into researching the best technology for these small devices.
Overall Summary of iRobot Roomba 650
This robot vacuum cleaner features some of the most impressive technology I have seen in a robotic vacuum. Taking into the consideration the low cost of this particular model, the value for money is incredible. If you are looking for a great robot vacuum cleaner, at a great price, this is our #1 recommendation. Do however keep in mind that as with all robot vacuum cleaners, they are best when supplemented with a handheld vacuum cleaner for those times when you want to vacuum any area of the ground, such as benchtops or the top of couches and chairs.
